A Survey on High-Frequency Operable AFE-RDC-MLI Topologies

Abstract
This paper presents a comprehensive review of active front-end (AFE)-based reduced device count (RDC) multilevel inverter (MLI) topologies that offer high dynamic performance, compact size, and improved power quality. These topologies, featuring an AFE converter followed by a synchronized H-bridge, operate at high switching frequencies, producing high-quality output voltage waveforms with reduced total harmonic distortion (THD). Suitable for renewable energy, motor drive, and grid-connected applications, AFERDC- MLIs leverage advanced control strategies and benefit from the integration of wide-bandgap (WBG) devices, which can significantly enhance topology performance. This survey provides an in-depth analysis of high-frequency operable AFE-RDC-MLI topologies and highlights their applications.
