Design and Development of a Hybrid Electric Vehicle with Dual Drive System

Abstract

This study focuses on the design and construction of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) having a dual drive system. Such a system incorporates the benefits of both internal combustion engines and electric propulsion. The underlying objective of such a system is to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions while enhancing the overall performance of the vehicle. In such a system, the two sources of propulsion (an internal combustion engine and electric hub motors) are connected in parallel. The internal combustion engine is connected to the vehicle’s wheels mechanically, while the hub motors are powered by a lithium-ion battery. Central to the system is a vehicle control unit (VCU), which regulates both sources of power. The VCU is designed to determine the most efficient method of propulsion in order to reduce energy expenditures on the vehicle. The combined use of a battery management system, engine controller, and motor controller creates the seamless transition between power modes, as well as enhanced reliability and reduced energy expenditures. This dual drive configuration enables the vehicle to operate in electric mode for low-speed urban driving, while allowing the vehicle to switch to, or combine, engine power for driving at higher speeds and for longer distances. The project promotes cleaner transportation through hybrid vehicle design to sustain mobility.
