Abstract

Image-based misinformation, as it spreads very fast on social media, is raising concerns for the reliability and trust in information. It is widely known that many instances of visual misinformation involve authentic images reused in misleading contexts rather than direct manipulation. It aims to review context-aware visual verification systems and how these integrate for misinformation detection. It discusses existing models that combine visual analysis, metadata review, semantic alignment, and historical image usage. The study points out the main challenges, research gaps, and future directions, and calls for scalable yet explainable verification mechanisms that can actually deal with real-world misinformation scenarios.
