Effectiveness and Risks of using DES for Data Storage and Database Security: Current Vulnerabilities and Migration Requirements

Abstract

Given the effectiveness of the Data Encryption Standard (DES) in the current threat environment, we can observe that the encryption algorithm that was once the standard is no longer up to the assignment. The algorithm's strength has been weakened by the demonstrated flaws in the DES algorithm as well as advancements in computing power. The DES algorithm, its flaws, including differential cryptanalysis and brute-force attacks, are thoroughly examined in this paper along with real-world examples that take advantage of the algorithm's shortcomings. To emphasize that DES is no longer adequate for today's encryption needs, we also compare it to the efficacy of contemporary encryption techniques, particularly AES. We demonstrate why switching from DES to AES and 3DES is no longer a matter of convenience, but rather a compelling necessity, after carefully examining the various degrees of attacker sophistication, migration pain points, and regulatory mandates.
