Abstract

In high-risk areas like mining, effective real-time environmental monitoring is crucial from a safety and operational standpoint. In this work, we propose EIDAS, which stands for Edge-Linked Industrial Data Acquisition System, an industrial-grade system built for hazardous environments with ESP32 microcontrollers and peer-to-peer wireless communication using the ESP-NOW protocol. The architecture is modular and comprises three nodes: a sensing unit with gas sensors, a local alert system, a relay node which expands the communication range, and a cloud-integrated node for data visualization and mobile applications. Remote monitoring is facilitated through ThingSpeak and the Blynk app, while local alerts are provided via LCD display and buzzer. Local data acquisition can be on-demand or scheduled. We tested the system under simulated conditions and found it to be reliable, responsive, and scalable. EIDAS shows great promise as an infrastructure agnostic industrial safety IIoT solution and can be adapted to support multi-parameter monitoring in many environments.
