Smartphone Camera-based Real-Time Heart Rate Estimation under Varying Lighting

Abstract

This paper introduces an approach for real-time heart rate detection using a smartphone camera. It tackles the difficulties caused by changing light levels and movementrelated noise. Through the use of advanced image analysis integrated with machine learning, the system successfully captures the basic PPG signal. PPG is a proven, non-invasive technique that measures changes in light absorption due to blood flow in the body. Its uses go beyond just tracking heart rate and oxygen levels. The proposed method improves accuracy and dependability by using strong signal processing along with analyzing video frames of the user’s face, making it work well in everyday unpredictable environments. As PPG plays a bigger role in clinical and wearable health tech, this study helps expand its use in mobile health monitoring. Testing shows that the smartphone-based system is just as accurate as traditional medical tools, but is more portable, affordable, and easy to use. The findings highlight the promise of smartphone-based health monitoring as a practical and scalable option for personal and remote healthcare.
