Developing Systems for Translating Braille Documents into Natural English Text to Improve Accessibility

Braille documents serve as a vital educational resource for visually impaired individuals. However, their traditional form, often created on heavy and cumbersome metallic plates, presents significant difficulties in terms of handling, maintenance, and transportation. Additionally, these documents are prone to wear and tear, especially in unfavourable environmental conditions, which further hinders their usability and longevity. This study seeks to overcome these limitations by converting Braille documents into digital text. Digitized documents can be effortlessly shared across the globe via the internet and reproduced in Braille whenever necessary. This approach simplifies storage, ensures better preservation, and facilitates broader accessibility. The primary focus of this research is on extracting Braille character patterns from physical documents for accurate translation into English text. The paper examines and evaluates numerous tools utilized for this Braille-to-text conversion process.
