Abstract

In this paper a simple and novel additional subsynchronous damping controller (SSDC) is proposed for STATic synchronous COMpensator (STATCOM) to damp out subsynchronous oscillations in a series compensated transmission line power system. The subsynchronous damping controller (SSDC) which uses remotely located generator rotor speed deviation signal as the stabilizing input signal to damp subsynchronous oscillations has been designed. Transient simulations of detailed nonlinear system and FFT analysis are considered to investigate the performance of the controller. This paper deals with 48-pulse GTO based Voltage Source Converter. The IEEE Second Benchmark system is considered for the analysis of subsynchronous resonance (SSR) and the transient simulations of the entire system with STATCOM are performed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment.
