Design and Analysis of LNA with Modified Techniques for X Band Application

Abstract

In an electronic communication receiver system, maximum power gain and minimum noise figure of an amplifier are equally important. However both cannot be achieved simultaneously. A trade-off between these two parameters gives an optimal design. A practical design of single stage Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) is reported in this paper work for X-band applications like radar, satellite ground station services and Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) service. The LNA is designed with the nonlinear model of MOSFET. Advanced Design System (ADS) tool is used to construct and simulate the circuit. The performance of an amplifier such as Noise Figure, Gain, VSWR, 1 dB compression point, Third Order Intercept point (TOI), Harmonic power levels, Dynamic Range are analyzed by considering all device parasitic elements including package parasitic. It is a hybrid Microwave Integrated Circuit (MIC) implementation which uses both minimal microwave discrete components and micro strip transmission lines for biasing and matching networks. In the design of LNA using HEMT, 30 dB gain using three stages has been achieved. In this paper work, gain is conveniently improved to 11 dB even with single stage. The IIP3 also well improved to 15 dBm rather than −1 dBm reported. The 1 dB compression point also quite better as 7 dBm.
