Abstract
Shell and tube type heat exchangers are one of the most commonly used heat exchangers for wide range of industrial applications. Being cost effective and energy efficient are the prime objective while designing the heat exchangers. The genetic algorithms are very effectualtool for the optimization of these parameters. Genetic algorithms can be used for optimization in various fields. Optimization of shell and tube heat exchangers is one such case. In this study three shell and tube heat exchangers encompassing varied uses are optimized for single objective functions of minimizing total cost and pressure drops by Genetic algorithm. These results in significant cost reductions compared to the original cases. Shell inside diameter, tube outside diameter and baffle spacing is used as the constraint variables. The results are also analysed for sensitivity against fluctuations in electricity prices.
