Enhancing Urban Sustainability: IoT-based Smart Street Lighting with Adaptive Control and Fault Detections

Abstract
This project proposes a smart street light monitoring system leveraging IoT technology to improve energy efficiency, safety, and maintenance in urban environments. Traditional street lighting wastes energy by operating continuously, even when not needed. To address this, the system integrates sensors for intelligent lighting control. Infrared (IR) sensors detect vehicles and pedestrians, activating lights only when movement is present, reducing unnecessary energy consumption. Light Dependent Resistors (LDRs) monitor ambient light levels, automatically adjusting brightness or turning off lights during daylight hours to conserve energy. Additionally, LDRs aid in fault detection, identifying malfunctions and notifying authorities for timely maintenance, preventing prolonged service disruptions. By integrating IoT-based automation, this system minimizes energy costs, enhances public safety, and ensures efficient infrastructure maintenance. It contributes to sustainable urban development by optimizing street lighting, reducing operational expenses, and lowering carbon emissions, making cities smarter and eco-friendlier.
