Reconfigurable Slotted Patch Antenna with Partial Ground for Cognitive Radio Application

Abstract
In the dynamic realm of cognitive radio (CR) communications, real-time spectrum monitoring plays a crucial role in optimizing network performance. This paper introduces an reconfigurable slotted patch antenna design featuring a partial ground plane, tailored specifically for CR applications for stronger signals. The proposed antenna incorporates a feeding line and a PIN-diode-based switch within the feeding network, allowing for efficient spectrum sensing and adaptability to varying transmission conditions. The design utilizes the partial ground plane to reduce alignment resonance modes. Experimental results show the antenna's ability to function within a frequency range of 3.8661 GHz to 3.9883 GHz with S11 = - 22.145 dB in the off state and from 3.8775 GHz to 4 GHz with S11 = -20.1 dB in the on state. These features highlight the antenna's suitability for CR systems requiring rapid sensing and robust signal management. The reconfigurable characteristic of the antenna supports spectrum cognition and multi-element switching beam steering, thereby improving the utility and performance of CR networks overall. This pioneering design aims to push forward future communication technology by enabling more reliable and adaptable wireless networks, thus presenting itself as a viable solution for contemporary CR applications.
