Demand Response Framework for Minimizing Power Loss by Optimizing DG Parameters

Abstract

The electricity becomes an important need in human day-to-day life. The power demand has increased drastically due to huge population and various industrial revolutions in the whole world.The electricity grid is not able to meet the electricity demand due to various practical reasons. Due to the huge demand,the grid becomes overloaded, which causes huge transmission loss and voltage instability.In this project, we are focusing on two objectives. One objective is to minimize the Peak to Average load Ratio (PAR) per day of end users and providing incentives to the participating customers. Demand Response Program (DRP) is introduced to reduce power consumption during peak hours in the electric grid which improves the reliability of the grid and reduces the need for investments in power plants for meeting the demands in peak hours. The DRP is based on categorizing the devices as shift able and non – shift able loads.The shift able loads are shifted from the peak hours to off peak hours Another objective is to minimize the power losses and to meet the electrical demand by placing Distributed Generation (DG) in IEEE 9 Bus system.DG reduces transmission losses and it also reduces the peak power requirements through on site generation. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is a search based technique which provides an optimal solution. Hence Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used for optimal location of Distributed Generation (DG) units for reducing the system losses.
