Abstract
The patriarch society has always showed a biased attitude towards women. The
systematic subjugation of women, the normalization of abuse and harassment and the
manifestation of everyday power that men hold sets the paradigm of the society’s attitude. Over
the period of time the social shaming and taming of the women has accumulated and boasted by
society. From social to cultural, from economical to emotional, from physical to virtual this
attitude has resurfaced in different forms and shapes via new ways and belief systems.
The virtual world, especially social media, has now become a new space to shame-tame women.
Facebook, one of the most popular and widely used social media platforms in India, has become
a dumping ground for hate towards women. Presented here is a study of the counterarguments
to the #MeToo Movement. Furthermore, the paper analyzes the contemporary and prevalent
attitudes and perceptions of Facebook users towards women and feminity. Whether social
media, like Facebook, has become an extended version of patriarchal society.
