Abstract

Monitoring of road surface conditions like asphalt, water, ice and snow is essential for most transportation agencies, as they are responsible for road maintenance. Information on road surface conditions can be used to assess the need for maintenance service, compare the effectiveness of different treatment methods, and evaluate the quality of the maintenance services delivered by contractors across different maintenance yards. The Road sensor uses three wavelengths and one photo detector to determine the intensities that are reflected from the road surface and is then able to estimate the road condition. By linking this sensor to a GPS and a miniature wireless Embedded Internet system, it is proposed to implement through cloud system, the road conditions can be associated with the correct road position, making it possible to use the information in many different applications.
